“The Painted Lady” photographs by Michele Danels documents the work of artist Marjorie Kouns and model/dancer Marisa Maffia. Photographs of Kouns’ “Body as Canvas” were taken at the Howl festival at the infamous Tompkins Square Park at the annual Art Around the Park 2005 event. While Maffia dances fluidly, Kouns painting interacts with ever changing body movement and previously set paint. The painting is more a process evolution than an end result. The interaction is a dynamism of the body and creative spirit as they both move through time. The results at any given moment, frozen by photograph, stand on their own as a reflection of the current state both complete and in transition. Danels’ photographs as a collection capture the process. Individually they capture the moments. The model, Marisa Maffia exemplifies the strength, power, and serenity of the female spirit. Along with the synergistic movements of painter Marjorie Kouns and her intuitive splashes of bright light filled color that she was inspired to set free all over while they moved and played together, bringing forth a dance of life, movement, color, potential and the actualization of creative spirit. The possibility of what the human spirit is capable of despite limited moments in a finite world. In Danels’ years of work as a videographer, she’s often been hired to videotape gallery openings. With the movement of the video camera she brought life to static art. Now as a photographer, she’s captured art in motion creating a string of moments, static in time but filled with dynamism. “What I‘ve captured is that the human spirit is limitless and filled with remarkable potential and that is in each of us,” says Michele Danels.
