Originally, recorded earlier in the mental sense of "to disorder" the mind, etc. (from 1612), than in the literal sense, "to take (a door, etc.) off its hinges" (from 1616). When I was creating these three works, I was considering "Disorder" and things coming off the wall, like a door falling off its hinges. You see, when a door works properly, it's like a Rorschach artwork; for example, when a door is closed it looks like it is one of the sides of a Rorschach artwork; and then, when it is open, it is basically the same design (on the opposite side of the door), but now it is the opposite side of the artwork - the mirrored image. If there are slight variations on either side of the mirrored image, then it is because the subject - in our example, a 'door' - has become 'unhinged', and provides a slightly different visual perspective with minute variations. Of course, damage to one side can also cause variations in what we see: Very few things in this world are perfect - most probably nothing is without flaws. My Rorschach artworks do, however, get viewers involved, to visualize whatever they can conjure up in their imaginations.
